So THAT's what Mickey D's is good for!

Mickey D’s grease. It clogs arteries and fattens American children to astronomical levels of obesity. But it’s not just good for that, it’s also the answer to the high gas prices! Well, maybe not for everyone, but according to the Sydney Morning Herald in their report that used cooking oil will be donated by Makati outlets in the Philippines for police patrol cars. The mixture will parallel that of an average investment portfolio allocation – the 60/40 rule. In this case, 40% diesel and 60% cooking oil. Why they chose to just donate to police and not the overall public, I guess the world may never know. One thing’s for sure, if I’m touching McDonalds grease, it won’t be traveling down MY digestive system, but rather pumped into my cars belly, just like time crunched and oblivious parents feed their kids. The difference is that my car will stay slim and trim as the first day it was manufactured…unlike its human grease eating counterparts.

O is for obliques, S is for sweat

Yowza, Monday nights cardio box/sculpt class kicked my ass more than usual. All of my large muscle groups are sore. Even those smaller muscles, of which I don't recall the names despite being 1 of the handful of smarty pants in kinesiology class during my 9th grade year.

Well whatever they are..they hurt. The intercostal spaces between my riblets hurt. My glutes hurt, but the bright side of that is that I've felt how uplifted the buttocks feel. I have developed quite the callipygian ass. Not only do I benefit from a hard workout, Har sure does as well in a tactile and eye candy sorta way.

Last night, the a/c was out in dance class. Pair that with a fast paced routine, and you might as well call it Bikram Dance. Ugh, the must and humidity was thick and naaasty. Everyone sweat buckets throughout class and surprisingly no one fainted. Nonetheless, we still had a good ol' time doing a routine that paid homage to old school moves like the running man and robocop to the beat of Poison.

Beachy Keen

Yeah yah these posts are late. That just goes to show how proccupied I am with having a life and not just writing about one-good news, yes?

So check it out- Saturday the Mai-Li bday celebrants went to Manhattan Beach. I was psyched to bike there from MDR but most of the crew wanted to be lazy and drive instead. Boo! My BF hung back and decided to be lazier by not joining us for the fun. Boo x 2.

Anyhoo, Mai-Li officially hated the ocean for a few minutes right before she started boogie boarding and having fun. Justen ate it while dare deviling through the waters, Anne almost drowned nekkid, I caught some tan renewing rays until it all of a sudden became cold and overcast, and although I was sure Liz would get a ticket for an extended hour of beach fun past out meter limit, there was none. Birthday luck I guess.

We were off to Anne's place for bbq, booze, watched recorded "Americas Best Dance Crew" episodes, and caught rock band feva all night.

Universal remixed

This past Sunday we celebrated Mai-Li's entry into teenagehood at Universal Studios; being that I haven't been there in ages, I was intrigued with the notion of new motion-simulating rides, tourist geared 'it's just like being in a movie!' shows, and a revamped studio back lot tour.

The most noteworthy of all the rides was The Simpsons ride. Formerly home to Back 2 the Future, this attraction got layers upon layers of bright paint, faux Kwik-E-Mart and Moe's Tavern facades, and cool Krustyland type posters lining the herding gates. The ride was the same concept as B2TF, but so fun, creative, and fast paced. The coolest part was when giant Maggie "picks up" the car we're in and attempts to put us in her mouth like a pacifier. When Marge yells for her to stop and she spits us out, you get sprayed with her baby spit that actually smelled like baby-I think baby wipes or baby powder. Either way that was nice attention to detail.

The other changes were the Conan the Barbarian show turned Haunted House of Horrors, E.T. turned Mummy Returns, the doing away of kit from Knight Rider (yes, its been THAT long!), and an update to the studio tour, involving new props from recent movies and coats of paint. The one thing I missed was the King Kong sound stage and rickety bridge. They did have a cool outdoor set of the props used in War of the Worlds and Who homes from The Grinch (made out of styrofoam!)

We all indulged in the availability of booze in an amusement park, just because we could if for no other compelling reason to drink at 11 am on a Sunday.

By the end of the day we were pooped and ready to bid adieu to US remix style.

The earth's a' movin!

Shake..shake..shake that thang, girl! Mama Earth put her dancing shoes on and cut a rug today just before noon. An earthquake centered in Chino, CA. measured 5.8ish in magnitude shook our office like a salt shaker. I was on the phone with a city official and we didn’t quite know what to do except to continue on with our conversation!

Shaken (no pun intended) by the moments of quaking that escalated in intensity until the end, my colleagues and I needed some good ol’ comfort food to get the adrenaline out of our systems so we could continue working for the day.

We went to Yogurtland, and tried practically every single flavor on the wall. A few sweet bites later, we felt back to normal, and headed back in the office to continue the day.

Cardio barre

I woke up bright and early to join Joan for a cardio barre class today in Studio City. I pass by the studio on my drive in to work and have noticed it's a full house most of the time. I don't know who came first: Cardio Barre or The Bar Method but, hey-tomato tamatoe it's basically the same thing.

Well, I gotta say it was pretty good, I worked up a nice sweat, the pace of class was quick, but one irk was that I couldn't check my form in the mirrors because the class was wall 2 wall full of people. I didn't really do any exercise I've done before, but it was challenging enough because of the seemingly endless reps of each move. The ab section doesn't hold a candle to Colin K's ab class at Crunch, though.

Worth the $16 every once in a while when I'm too lazy to drive over the hill to Crunch, but not enough of a wow factor to make me a loyal fan quite yet.

Lake bake

This afternoon I went w/ the BF to Lake Piru with the intent to surprise the family. 3 hours into our search for them in hopes to catch them on their way in for a break, we decided to lay out on a hilltop overlooking the lake to get some tan time in while waiting.

When we finally saw them the BF had a 'tude blowout with his bros so we ended up going back to the camp site, battled equipment going awry, ate a little, drank a little, went back home to shower, and then went to watch 1/2 of hulk (don't ask)!

Visualize this

Visualization as a way to create reality is not some new agey bullshit. It's testament to the power of thought, and what you attract into your life. Ever notice when you focus your thought on something bad, you often fulfill your self-created prophesy? Same rules apply if you expose and train your mind towards the positive.

Pro athletes have known this strategy for ages, and they still do it to this day. High powered CEO's close their eyes and picture themselves giving a flawless speech seconds before they physically step up on the platform to do it.

Of course, you have to back up the power of your mind with actual effort and action. But, it all starts with your thoughts. This is the difference between mediocrity and greatness.

I refuse to leave my fate up to the state of that which is out of my control. I was reminded of this "life treasure map" after reading the millionaire mommy next door blog. Thanks MMND!
Although naysayers may look at my visualization board as nothing but a bunch of pictures and sayings taped to a board, I beg to differ.

It's an expression of my life in the now, so that I can consciously put it out there and gravitate closer and closer to what will be my reality. I dare you to harness the power of your mind and look at how closely your present comes to what you have taped to your board a year from the day you created it. What have you got to lose except a board, some magazines, and tape..right?

I am hanging this in the hallway where I get ready every morning, so that its the one of the first things I see at the start of every day.

Many successful people have done this and reaped the benefits (again, I can't overemphasize the need to take the action necessary to propel what you have called in with your thoughts). Jim Carrey used the same principle when he was a struggling stand up comedian. He took out a check and wrote himself a million dollar check. Today he can cash that check ten times over and then some.

One of my favorite quotes comes from Bruce Lee and its the perfect way to close this post:

"To hell with circumstances; I create opportunities."

Take 10

It's not everyday I step outside the office to take a break; most times I eat at my desk and catch up on some internet time.

Today, I thought I was due for some fresh air since it wasn't as hot as it's been most other days. I looked at my leftovers from last night-enchiladas and black beans-and noticed how yummy and nicely presented it still is the day after. I'm pretty impressed with my small, but still pretty good, cooking skills. Thanks to TJ's for great ingredients and Women's Health Mag for 30 minute or less recipes.

I also noticed a really pretty cloud pattern in the sky. Yes, I take the time to appreciate these type of things if you haven't caught on by now.

Ahhh..well, back to the flourescent lit office I go!

Natural exterminator

For the past few days, I've had a few flies annoyingly buzz buzzing around the house, kamikaze diving straight for my dinner and doing fly bys in past my head, right in my ear.

Typically, I like to clean the cobwebs from my window sill, but I hesitated when I realized that my little spidey friend caught two of those pests in his strategically placed web. He has actually created a mutually beneficial relationship by building his home in my living room. If he could I bet he'd spin the words "will catch and eat flies for shelter" Charlotte Webb style in his web. I even saw him catch one-it was like a mini national geographic show up close and personal.

Although I'm a stickler for cleanliness and order, the two flies stuck in the web and the ever growing spider are okay with me. The least I can do in exchange for his services is not kill him, after all.

Hickey spotting

So I’ve been giving a friend a hard time about his retro neck decoration that I noticed over the holiday weekend. I got a good belly laugh out of it – more of a guffaw, actually, since I think only people with big bellies can have belly laughs. He had, ladies and gents, a hickey. A HICKEY! Badge of fame? More like badge of LAME! That’s something so rare to see nowadays that it’s almost like finding a prehistoric artifact in my backyard. This is how the conversation went:

Me: Ha ha! You have a hickey!
Anonymous (to protect the innocent from complete embarrassment): Ahh, I know. I didn’t know she was doing it at the time!

Tom: That’s because all the blood in your brain went elsewhere!

Me, my cousin, her husband, Joan, and Jay: Roaring in laughter

Me: I haven’t seen or given a hickey in ages – since like the freshman year of high school. And they were lame back then too!

Anonymous: Ha ha, you got me. I got nothing!

Me: The only people these days who give/get hickeys are cholo’s and their hinah’s ß(spelling??)

Crowd: More roars of laughter

Anonymous: Shakes his head in shame

Me: Ha ha ha – she marked you the way dogs mark their territory. I think it means she wants to marry you. So who’s the lucky Hinah??

LMAO, I could go on and on, but you get the picture.

To further confirm my statement about the cholo/hinah thing….lookie lookie what I spotted on the neck of…(drum roll please)…yes, you guessed it! A cholo. Hickey on a cholo, 12  o’ clock, while I was eating my $7.99 Baja taco feast at Raging Waters.

Hey, when a girl’s right, she’s right! The proof is in the pudding, or in this case, the proof is in the patch o’ hinah love on that guys neck!

Big kids, little park

For Steve’s birthday, Anne rounded up a bunch of his friends for a little fun in the sun at Raging Waters in San Dimas. It was a lot bigger back when I was 8 years old, which was the last time I’ve been there! J The first slide line was a bust – we did a whole lot of waiting since everyone and their mama, baby’s daddy, aunt, uncle, cousin, sister, brother, step kid, in-law, friend, colleague, BFF, lover, ex, crush, and FTF in San Dimas decided to go to the park during this long holiday weekend!!

Check out these wait times:

- Bag check at entrance: 30-45 minutes (accompanied by ear piercing screaming by a child for about 5-10 minutes).

- Locker check-in: 30 minutes

- First slide line: 1.5 – 2 hours??

Luckily, most of the group was a bunch of calm, collected, and relaxed folks so it didn’t foul up the mood too much!

Toni convinced me into riding Dropout, reportedly the tallest and most vertical ride/slide in the country.

Toni: Joy let’s go!

Me: Ugh, my heels hurt and I’m tired of lines!

Toni: C’mon, the line is short, this is the perfect way to end your day!

Me: Fine, okay, let’s do it!

After climbing the 7th story of stairs and getting a birds eye view of the seemingly 90 degree plunge-o-terror, I felt like punching her in the face. I saw two kids eagerly in front of me do it without problems. Then I saw two dare devil teenage boys sitting up right before they hit their descent (NOT a good idea, because you risk losing contact from the slide). Once I was up, the lifeguard told me to lie back, cross my ankles and put my arms across my chest. I tried to super glue my back to the slippery slide to ensure I wouldn’t lose contact and tumble forward into a free fall once I started my descent.

Lifeguard: You ready?

Me: Push me slow, please

(She heeds my request)

Me (as I fall at 40 mph): AAaaaaaaaahhhhhhh Shhhhiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitttttt!

Once I came to a stop, I opened my eyes, pulled my bikini bottom back into position (it was halfway up my ass due to the g-force of water going the opposite direction), and got up and smiled. Since I survived with not a scratch on me, I was happy that I braved the insanity that just ensued!

Gratitude Day 4 & 5

Oops – forgot to post, but that doesn’t mean I’m not grateful for things!

Sunday thankful list:

*Fun in the sun with friends

*Braving the vertical water slide and not plunging to my death

*A freshened up tan

Today’s thankful list:

*Getting to work on time

*Endless possibilities

*That my BF finally has a day off (even though I’m at work now!)

Cheap and chic

Ahhh..what a perfect Saturday. I finally used a gift certificate from a friend for a massage at Massage Envy on Ventura Blvd.

Although there were a few kinks in the beginning, such as a booking snafu and a 20 minute late start to my appointment, my therapist worked out all the kinks in my upper back. She called them 'stress knots'; based on the sound of them as she forced them out, apparently it seemed that I had a lot of pent up stress back there. 60 minutes later, I felt brand new and unwound.

They had booked me at 1:30 on the phone, but when I arrived they said I was down for 2. Luckily, there were some cute boutiques I perused to kill time. I found a cute dress and two bracelets-one of a snake and the other a jaguar that I couldn't pass up. I figured I could afford to spend a few bucks since the massage was free, including gratuity!

Afterward, I went to Shoe Pavillion and found 3 pairs of cute summer sandals for only $67..total! I love a good bargain.

All and all, a great day of rest, relaxation, and good shopping.

4th of July

What an awesome 4th I had with my family! My boo worked, so it was my immediate fam along with my Grandma, cousin Dez and Bruce and baby Chris, along with the bros who joined us for BBQ and libations in the afternoon.

It was a hot one, so we had the table umbrellas and the misters going in full effect. There was food o' plenty- BBQ chicken, ribs, baked fish, lumpia, strawberry shortcake, etc. After eating we played a lil" rock band and some of us took food naps before heading down to the Rose Bowl.

We ended up parking like a mile or so away due to the mass of people heading in. Once we got seated in the stadium (mostly all of our first times there) we watched some drum/band/dance performances before the big show.

When the clock struck 9, the stadium lights went out and the stadium was pitch black aside from the glow necklaces and toys sprinkled in the audience. The announcer had us count down from 10 and the fireworks commenced.

This was by far the best fireworks show I've ever seen- the fireworks are setup on the other end of the stadium (they only fill it w/ people on one half).

The show is very up in your face- the fireworks are shot up just above the stadium so you get an amazing view. They look so big close up and literally filled up the sky above us-you could even hear the ricochet of them taking off.

Each firework set had a quick interlude with independence history on the big screen and the show is accompanied by music. They had awesome fireworks of all colors and designs. Some exploded into planets, happy faces, squigglies, and even squares.

A half hour later after the finale the crowd roared in cheer. And even though it was a zoo to exit the stadium, everyone left w/ a smile on their face.

carnivore or omnivore?

Hmm..how can I describe my dietary preferences? I gravitate towards vegetarian choices, but I still eat chicken, seafood, and the occasional porkchop. And even less frequently, like on a full moon basis or something, I take a bite of a too good to pass up slab of steak. Also, if my choices are limited to beef…beef…and more beef, well, I choose beef.  Anyhoo, thanks to new and inventive vocabulary by witty and insightful wordsmiths, my eating style officially has a label.

“Hi, my name is Joy, and I’m a flexitarian.” I also have hints of locavore (one who prefers to consume locally grown produce) J

Day 2

Today I’m grateful:

  • That all my basic needs (food, shelter, clothing) are all met
  • That I have all 5 senses
  • That last nights payment on my credit card brought me to a zero balance!
  • That my dog smiles
  • For my blackberry and the fact that I control IT, not the other way around!
  • That more and more people are becoming eco-conscious and making choices that make a difference
  • That I have some discretionary money for buying summer sandals (even after paying bills, investing, AND saving!)

Attitude or Gratitude?

It's been said that you can't receive more in life if you are not grateful for what you have now; if you can't acknowledge what's right in your life, your glass will be perpetually half-empty; impossible to fill no matter how much shit you try to pour into it.

This month we celebrate American independence. Today, the 4th to most people simply means fireworks, corny red, white, and blue party hats, BBQ's, and a day off of work. But let's not take for granted the significance of this day in history that provides us with life as we know it.

Don't forget, there are situations in the world outside of the bubble you and I live in that repress, control, mistreat, or neglect their inhabitants all together.

Yes, we have our share of problems but, c'mon-you know there is much about America to be grateful for - first and foremost, our independence.

In honor of this holiday, I will post at least 3 things I am grateful for each day (more if the mood or day insinuates it). You should try this, too.

I think both you and I will be amazed at the power of what a few thoughts of gratitude can do for the mind, body, and soul.

Today I am glad for:

* 3-day weekends

* Self-discipline, which reaps rewards like good health, an enviable credit score, financial fitness, career growth, and six pack abs.

* Long Summer days
